| Anti-Semitism Following Market Crisis | The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in a report last week said the latest U.S. financial meltdown has caused the flood gates of anti-Semitism to swing wide again on Internet discussion boards and blogs. Hundreds of hate messages have been posted to mainstream forums promoting archaic stereotypes and conspiracy theories alleging Jews control the economy, banking, the government and seek to impose a "Jew world order" on the rest of mankind. Those who again seek to scapegoat the Jewish people ignore the financial crisis has been triggered by a plague of human lust for possessions and wealth, sweeping across the U.S. and further afield. Like all disease it has not been limited to any race, religion, class or creed. (Ynet) "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." 1 Tim 6:10 |
| Admiral Mullen Gloomy on Afghanistan | With security and economic conditions in Afghanistan already in dire straits, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday that the situation there would probably only worsen next year. Admiral Mullen said Afghanistan was likely to continue what a nearly completed intelligence assessment called "a downward spiral" unless there were rapid, major improvements. Those improvements include curbing Afghanistan's booming heroin trade, bolstering district and tribal leaders to offset a weak central government in Kabul, breathing life into a flagging economy and stemming the flow of militants who are carrying out increasingly sophisticated attacks from havens in Pakistan. Admiral Mullen underscored a point he has made repeatedly in the past: the military can be only one part of the solution in Afghanistan. "We've got to impact pretty significantly, pretty fast on the poppy issue," he said referring to the heroin trade, a scourge that by some estimates accounts for 50 percent of Afghanistan's economy and pours $100 million a year into the Taliban's coffers. | Iraqi Christians Face "Liquidation" | Iraq's Christians face "liquidation," the Chaldean archbishop of the northern city of Kirkuk told AFP in an interview, urging Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to guarantee the minority's safety. Archbishop Louis Sako also called on the U.S. military to do more to protect Christians and other minorities in the face of a rash of deadly attacks that has prompted growing numbers to flee the country. The archbishop said that in the main northern city of Mosul six Christians had been killed in less than a week. He said that since the U.S.-led invasion of 2003, more than 200 Christians had been killed and a string of churches attacked, and added that the violence had intensified in recent weeks, particularly in the north. He said it was now time for Maliki's Shiite Muslim-led government to deliver on repeated promises to do more to protect Iraq's minorities. There were around 800,000 Christians in Iraq at the time of the U.S.-led invasion, a number that has now shrunk by a third as the faithful have fled the country, the archbishop said. "Those who carry out the attacks want to either push Christians out of the country or force them to ally with some political projects." Sako said. He called on Christians not to lose faith with Iraq. "The government does not belong to one religion . . . we are not religious extremists," he said. "Christians are true sons of Iraq." (AFP 10/10/08) |
| N. Korea May Allow Nuclear Inspections | United States may remove North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism The Bush administration is nearing a decision to remove North Korea from a terrorism blacklist in a bid to salvage faltering nuclear disarmament talks. The delisting depends on North Korea agreeing to a plan to verify an account of its nuclear activity that it submitted over the summer. U.S. officials said Thursday that no final decision had been made, but diplomats briefed on the matter told the AP that they believe an announcement that North Korea will be tentatively taken off the State Department's list of state sponsors of terrorism is imminent. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of an expected announcement. North Korea would be put back on the list if it doesn't comply with the plan. (AP, USA Today) |

| Egypt: Christian-Muslim Tensions Grow | | May God sustain and preserve his people while continuing to build his Church in Egypt according to his promise. "Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud and comes to Egypt; and the idols of Egypt will tremble and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.' (Isaiah 19:1 ESV) 'And the Lord will make himself known to the Egyptians . . ." (Isaiah 19:21) May God give the authorities the will and the courage to curtail the violence by upholding the law and pursuing truth and justice. May God protect the monasteries and their inhabitants currently threatened with terrorism; may these threats draw more and more Christians into prayer and dependence on the Lord. Most of Egypt's 10 percent Christian minorities are Copts, the indigenous people of Egypt. According to tradition, the Apostle Mark took the gospel to Egypt in the 1st Century and by the 6th Century the nation was largely Christian. The decline of Islam, the end of the Caliphate, Egypt's time as a British protectorate and the rise of secular Arab nationalism all brought some relief to Egypt's Christians. But Islam's oil-sponsored resurgence has brought with it a revival of Islamic intolerance, systematic discrimination, persecution and religious conflict. On Saturday 4 October a minor incident between a Muslim and Christian in the majority Coptic village of al-Tayeba, near Minya in central Egypt, escalated into a violent communal clash. Property was damaged and a 19-year-old Coptic boy named Yeshua Gamal Nashed was shot dead. Terror threats to monasteries have escalated, forcing the closure of three of the four surviving monasteries. |
